Which State Tops The List Internet Subscribers In India?

Well, data regarding the number of internet subscribers in India is out, giving good news to the people of Maharashtra, as they are the ones who topped the list. With a total of 29.47 million users, Maharashtra tops the list, with almost no one around to give a neck to neck competition. Let us know about few other things as well:

The Performance of Other States

Talking about other states, the first one to come in my mind is Tamil Nadu, which has the maximum number of urban internet subscribers. Also, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have a total of 28.01, 22.63 and 24.87 million Internet subscribers respectively. While, Tamil Nadu has accounted for an approximate value of nine per cent of India’s total of 231 million urban subscribers, with around 21 million urban internet subscribers, Maharashtra and Delhi have contributed to over 19 million users each. Both of these states, that is Maharashtra and Delhi competed almost neck to neck, giving Maharashtra a lead of around 0.1 million urban subscribers, over Delhi. Maharashtra reported to have 19.7 million, while New Delhi has 19.6 million urban internet subscribers, followed by Karnataka, with 17 million users.

Who tops The List of Rural Internet Subscribers in India?

The Government data suggest that there is a total of 112 million rural Internet subscribers in India, out of a total of 342 million internet subscribers in India. The Up East’s telecom circle has the highest number of rural internet subscribers, with a total of 11.2 million users. This is followed by Maharashtra, with around 9.7 million rural internet users and then Andhra Pradesh, closing its heels with just over 9 million rural internet subscribers.

It is clear from the data, that the number of rural internet subscribers is far less than the number of urban internet subscribers. So, definitely a step should be undertaken in order to increase the number of rural internet users also.

How to Increase the Number of Rural Internet Subscribers

In order to improve the internet penetration in the rural areas, government has taken a step in to establish a gigantic infrastructural unit, by connecting all the 2.5 lakh gram panchayats, by the use of optical fiber , and hence deliver a broadband connectivity. This ambitious project, called BharatNet, which initially used to be called National Optical Fiber Network, has been planned to be implemented in the following three phases:

  • The first phase will be involved in connecting one lakh gram panchayats, by the month of March, the next year that is 2017.
  • This connection of network would be further extended to cover the remaining 1.5 lakh gram panchayats, by the month of December, the next year, that is, by 2018. This would form the second phase of the implementation plan.

In the third and last phase, a future-proof network to be completed by the year 2023. This network will involve the connection using optical fiber to connect the districts and blocks as well.
